Lacoste Tennis: The world of the brand
THE CROCODILE, THE STORY OF A SYMBOL
In 1923, while traveling to Boston with the French Davis Cup team, René Lacoste noticed a crocodile-skin suitcase. “If you win the match, I’ll give you this suitcase,” his coach Alan Muhr joked before the match. This anecdote inspired his nickname, “The Alligator,” which was first recorded by a journalist from the Boston Evening Transcript and would go on to become the brand’s emblem.
Seeking greater freedom of movement on the tennis courts, René Lacoste created the very first polo shirt in 1933. Today, the crocodile brand celebrates its sporting heritage with clothing for men, women, and children that is as elegant as it is easy to wear.
